Did Nicki Minaj endorse Mitt Romney? (WARNING: EXPLICT LANGUAGE)
Like all great art, the following line from rapper Nicki Minaj, on Lil Wayne's new Dedication 4 mixtape, has sparked an emotional debate about its true meaning:
I’m a Republican votin' for Mitt Romney/You lazy b-----s is f---ing up the economy
Publications ranging from Rapdose.com to Washington's The Hill took the line at face value upon hearing it on Monday, and, on Twitter, Minaj's fans weighed in with either happiness or grave disappointment.
HAPPINESS: "My girl, Nicki is a Republican voting for Mitt Romney;)," wrote @RepubGirlProbz.
GRAVE DISAPPOINTMENT: "No longer supporting @nickiminaj," wrote @Gorgeous_Si. "She rather her student fans lose healthcare & have student loan cuts under Romney than take a 3% tax crease."
But then political pundits entered the fray. They argued that Minaj was actually mocking Romney voters. "In context, Nicki Minaj is clearly satirizing 1% politics not 'endorsing' Romney," claimed Slate's Matthew Yglesias. "Speaker/author distinction is crucial." Concurred RealClearPolitics senior elections analyst Sean Trende: "There is about a .00000001 percent chance Nikki Minaj was not mocking Romney voters and is actually endorsing Romney."
MY VERDICT: You're allowed to rhyme Romney with economy, but Minaj cheated by pronouncing it "econmy," but redeemed herself by ending the next line with "zombie."
