Frosty weekend in store for Toronto

With a frosty weekend on the way, Toronto issued an extreme cold weather alert Friday morning.

It's expected that temperatures could dip as low as -18C Friday night, according to Environment Canada. Friday’s high will be about -5C as flurries continue throughout the day.

Things won't warm up on the weekend. There’s a chance of flurries on Saturday as well, with a high of -9C and a low of -18C predicted.

Sunday should be sunny, but the temperature is expected to stay steady at around -16C. An alert is called when Environment Canada predicts temperatures below -15C without wind chill. Alerts are issued to step up support services for homeless people and to try to get people in out of the cold.

The alert has been issued until further notice.
