Severe thunderstorm warning for cottage country

Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for cottage country and the surrounding areas.

The affected region includes York-Durham, Haliburton, Peterborough, Barrie, Muskoka and Algonquin.

There is the possibility of hail and 90 km/h winds but the rains seem to be passing quickly and will likely be over by 3 p.m., said Marie-Eve Giguere, a meteorologist for Environment Canada.

A cold front is expected to pass through southern Ontario in the afternoon and evening but Giguere says severe thunderstorms are unlikely to hit Toronto.

Environment Canada says people should take shelter if they see a storm approaching and to stay in doors for at least 30 minutes after they hear the last rumble of thunder.
