VIDEOS: Massive meteorite strikes Russia
More than 500 people were injured when a meteorite shot across the sky and exploded over central Russia on Friday, sending fireballs crashing to Earth, shattering windows and damaging buildings.
The meteorite streaked across the sky in the Russian city of Chelyabinsk (that would be where the letter A is on the map below), in the Ural Mountains.

Could this have something to do with that asteroid that's passing extremely close to earth today???

No, they entered from completely different angles. A coincidence, but entirely unrelated. We're bombarded with meteors every day but typically they're very small, and combine that with the fact that we don't inhabit the oceans or all of earth's land, we have no idea how often this sort of event happens.
