It's time for the Fall Home Show!
Can you believe it's home show season again already? The Fall Home Show kicks off today and runs through Sunday. Check out our roundup of what to expect, including home renovation advice from Toolgirl Mag Ruffman and delish drink recipes from cocktail stylist Dee Brun.
Earlier this week, I had the pleasure of chatting with Cheryl Torrenueva, from Home Heist and Restaurant Makeover to get a sneak peek at some of the tips she'll be sharing this weekend. While I'll be offering all the deets on her savvy shopping in Tuesday's Star, here's a taste of how she gets luxe looks for less!
For starters, Torrenueva says it's important to embrace the little details that can make a space feel special. She says she gets inspiration from her travels, for example, adding a tray to rest jewellery on a night table or countertop, or transferring shampoo and conditioner into pretty pump bottles. Those small touches can help give you the hotel experience at home.
If you want a polished glam space (a look that could be called Torrenueva's specialty), you've got to collect finishes that look like they're expensive - even if you picked them up at Ikea or the grocery store. Search for reflective finishes, like mirrored or lacquered pieces, and luxe fabrics like silk and velvet.
And, finally, don't be afraid to ask a friend. It's easy to get caught up in a seriously marked down purchase, but just because you're saving money doesn't mean it has to look or feel cheap. If you're not sure if that item you're eying can blend in with the rest of your belongings, Torrenueva suggests asking a friend for their advice - their unbiased eye can often confirm your suspicions.
You can find out the times for Torrenueva's talks (and get info on other workshops) here.
I'll be heading over to the show this weekend to scope out all the new products - and see if I can score some deals on goodies for around my own home!
