Doug Mepham was my co-conspirator in coming up with the concept for Targa Newfoundland. Targa president Bob Giannou, who did the other 99.9% of the work, will probably never forgive us...
Mepham's 'Blue Meanie' was, colour aside, a more-or-less exact duplicate of the red Mini JCW that I threw into the woods at 160 km/h in 2008.
It took Doug a couple of years to sort it out after he bought it, but it's now a very competitive entry.
Yesterday, Doug came up to me in the Kia Optima Turbo as I was slipping on the fire-resistant balaclava we wear under our helmets.
"How do you keep your glasses from getting fogged up with the balaclava?" he asked me. Like me, Doug is, um, visual-acuity-disenfranchised.
"I just turn on the air conditioning!" I replied.
"B$DG%^&*GRR-R&&%*$%" muttered Doug as he stomped away...
Y'see, Doug's car does not have air conditioning. Virtually no rally car does.
Nor cruise control.
Nor satellite radio.
Nor a back-up camera.
Rally in luxury, sez I.
