Athletes in perspective

It is such a pleasure covering the Vancouver Olympics. We have a top notch photo team of 6 and a videographer to bring you the sights of the Games. In addition there will be a new blog daily (perhaps more) with the stories behind the pictures.
Yesterday I went to check out our women's hockey team practicing. It is almost a lock that they will be in the gold medal match. It is a shame they get so overshadowed by the men's team but big money always seems to win out.
The greatest part of the practice was that they were wearing their new uniforms for a team picture. It was a joy to see these top ranked international athletes acting like the young women they are. We forget that many of these athletes are still teens or barely out of their teen years. We treat most athletes like Greek Gods, they also look the part of course. We also assume that because they are in the public eye and full of poise in front of the cameras they are a lot older than they are.
The girls were helping each other with their hair, goofing around and posing for their own pictures with their buddies.
For a moment there I thought I was watching my 13 year old daughter with her friends.
Goalie Kim St-Pierre does some stretching and some smiling before practice.
